In The Darkness

Where are You, Lord? Sometimes when I talk to You I feel as if I’ve entered a fairly large, pitch-dark room and closed the door. I know You’re here with me. When You’re silent, I sense Your Presence anyway. I can almost – but not quite – touch You. Your Presence is that potent: that palpable.

Sometimes I grope and stumble and call out to You as I instinctively put out my hand to get some clue of my whereabouts. When I call out, You sometimes answer and give me direction just by where Your voice is coming from. Sometimes You hold my hand and lead me gently along. Though I don’t see where I’m going, I rest assured and am comfortable with the knowledge that You do.

How I wish that I could see Your face: see in what direction You’re leading me! But that is not Your way. I learn trust in the dark . . . and though I cannot see You, I can sense and hear You; I can feel your touch and gropingly “see” evidence of Your work in my life and in the lives of others.

I’m in the darkness, but I’m not in the dark – and I’m not afraid of the dark. But how could that be – being with You in the dark? “”God is light”! On the other hand, “”The darkness and the light are both alike to You (Ps. 139:12; Dan. 2:22)””, and finally:

“For now we are looking in a mirror that gives only a dim (blurred) reflection [of reality as in a riddle or enigma], but then [when perfection comes] we shall see in reality and face to face! Now I know in part (imperfectly), but then I shall know and understand fully and clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully and clearly known and understood [by God].”

1 Cor. 13:12

Amplified Bible

P.S.  Once upon a time we thought darkness and light were opposite things: that the one could not exist in the presence of the other. Now we know about infra-red light, that there is light in seeming darkness, that some creatures can see in darkness, and that it only takes the right kind of lens or glasses to be able to see in the dark. The problem of not seeing lies in the naked human eye.

So indeed, darkness and light really are both alike to You, and in You “there is no darkness at all”. Wherever You are, there is light, and since You are everywhere, there really is no such thing as true darkness.

So, for us humans, both literally and figuratively it’s a matter of what You choose to reveal to us, and when You choose to do so . . . all in Your own good time.

About Me

At age thirteen I made my first diary from a tiny, old, blue, soft-leather-covered “needle-book” belonging to my mother. The book had pages made of calico, and in it different types of needles were stored.
